It's not good for me to read this when I am deciding to fast today.

I agree! 🙂

Turkish food is one of my all-time favorite cuisines! Everything is SO freaking good—I don’t think I’ve ever had to check if a restaurant was good or not because I just knew it would be. Also, I could honestly live off meze every day.

I agree with everything! :))

Mmmmm. I love it all!!! Everything you describe here sounds delish. I definitely enjoy this type of food (and now I’m hungry). 💜

Loved the spread, Gabi! I tasted Baklava once and really liked it. I try to have it a few times a year. Not too sweet but has a lingering taste which is easy on the stomach.

Thanks for commenting! Yes, a nice and lingering taste :) There are many recipes, but I like the classic one.

You gotta be kidding me! It's probably a good thing. I don't live over there because I don't know if I could stop eating. Every single thing you describe sounds absolutely delicious and it's wild that they put black and green olive spread on a bagel. I bet that's delicious and I love olives. The only thing I can have is anything with alcohol in it or too much caffeine so the coffee has to be avoided - but other than that seriously my mouth is drooling right now. I've just never seen anything like that before 😍😍😍

Turkish food is like an orgy of tastes and smells 🙂

They put olives everywhere, along with eggplant and tomatoes.

I was fortunate enough to grow up in Toronto and have authentic Turkey meals. And, I remember as a kid loving freshly roasted kestane

Is there a Turkish community?

Expand full comment

Oh my goodness Gabi, I can eat around the world in a week. Toronto and the greater area has pockets of ethnic communities and yes, there is a big Turkish community as well.

Then enjoy their delicacies whenever you can :)

The breakfast looks amazing! A Turkish friend has offered to host a foodie evening at her place and now I'm even more excited!

Oooooo, their hospitality is uncommon for European standards, enjoy! 🙂🤤

My favourite place in Istanbul is the spice market. So colourful and smells amazing. Also it is a great place for Turkish delight.

We have several Turkish restaurants in my home town. I enjoy a good baked lamb and tomato dish. Meeting sharing platters are always excellent too.

Yes, the spice market... Like you're in another (past) dimension. And it's great that you have diversity in the restaurant scene, in my home town that isn't the case :(

I was familiar with some of this food, but not the fabulous Turkish breakfast experience. It looks amazing. Do you know what a more standard, everyday Turkish breakfast is like?

I think it's similar to the hotel ones, plus the borek and some sausages.

I especially love the breakfasts, and if you visit in fresh fig and grape season it’s even better (August to October). However my sons only like to eat the simit and other breads! They are very cautious. My great grandparents came from Turkey and we always head burekas / burek growing up which is somewhat different to what you have in Croatia.

One thing I wish didn’t exist: rakı. I never want to see it again!

Expand full comment

Yes, burek is something I omitted in my post, as well as kofte and kebab, not a big fan of those :)

As for raki, I think it's too strong, as Croatian rakija, but it does help digest all that meet on the table :)

I took my first trip to Turkey last year. Thanks for reminding me of some of the foods I enjoyed! Hope to get back there to experience more…
