Fascinating! I really don’t know much of the history or superstition beyond just the phrase “evil eye” so this post was a welcome primer on the topic. Thanks!
I've had a blue eye pendant and anklet growing up! I still love these designs and wear pieces I adore in this style. As Indians, we inherit a few superstitions like this and have always hung one in our cars, houses, and other spaces. Both for their vibrant colours and looks, and superstitions at times, I'd say!
I'm from Kerala, and while we do use such items in our spaces, I think they're more commonly used in Northern India than in the South. I love this stuff, and even my first handmade clay pendant was a Nazr/Evil Eye locket pendant! 🧿
For us in Croatia I would say that these are a bit exotic, mostly because we are Roman Catholic. I like good luck charms from different cultures, you can learn a lot about tradition just from such small items.
That’s interesting, whilst I have heard of the generic ‘evil eye’ I hadn’t heard of nazar. The idea of blue-eyed people having powers is interesting too. It is believed by some that Alexander the Great had blond hair and one blue eye and one dark (brown?) eye.
Blue is also a colour of spirituality, faith, contemplation, knowledge and protection in Islam. It is often found in Islamic architecture and this may have helped the spread of ‘nazar’ via the Ottoman Empire and throughout the Middle East
Yes, perhaps that's why the blue color spread in the empire. And yes, Alexander probably had a lower melanin concentration, my aunt with that problem also has one blue and the other brown eye :)
Thanks for commenting, I'm glad I found these interesting facts...

I'm glad, you're welcome! I think it should be called 'anti-evil eye' :)
Good point!! 😃
I didn't know anything about this symbol either. The objects are very pretty!
They are! They’re everywhere in Turkey, and even in Greece, it’s at times over the top :)
