Yes to all of this! Great advice, and Bruno is adorable and lucky to have you :)

Thank you! :) He looks adorable, but he barks like a big dog and a lot! :)

HAHAH! I believe it. Tito also has a misleading bark - if you hear him from outside you think he’s much bigger than he is, which works great for us. Life goal: dog ranch. LOL.

As someone who has ended up in the hospital with an asthma attack because a previous traveller brought a pet into a place that didn't allow them, please, please respect a pet prohibition if an accommodation has them. Those of us with allergies rely on pet prohibitions to know if a place is safe for us to stay!

Of course, if the accommodation doesn't allow pets, it should be respected.

Great tips! Our travels mostly include our pet (our dog Kingsley) although we have never flown with him. He’s been mostly on EV road trips but also on trains and overnight boat ferries. One thing I’d add in to the essential things to bring is the doggy passport. This is essential as it allows the vet(s) to officially record any vaccinations (our dog needed rabies shots for our summer trip that involved a stop in the UK) and other medications (we always need to go to a vet to get a deworming pill within a certain time frame when we are driving home into Norway). We are usually good at remembering the passport but we did forget it once and it did cause us to have to jump through some extra hoops. 🐶

Great check list and advice. We lived in 5 countries in Africa and the US with our first dog who did not like air travel ONE BIT (and he was sure to let us know that) but he held up quite well even down below (he was too big for under the seat). Poor guy had to go through quarantine for a month when we moved to South Africa - I would never do that again. Our second dog would never have held up flying any distance in any part of the plane. But he loved car rides and we got to explore a lot of the US and Mexico with him.

Wow, I always wonder how you prepare your dog for the down below, poor things.

Poor guy did flights from Phoenix, AZ to Cairo, Egypt; Cairo to Lusaka, Zambia (with 3 stops - Khartoum, Nairobi, Lilongwe); Lusaka to Johannesburg (where he had to do a month of quarantine); Joburg to Nairobi; and Nairobi to Boston. We always had a thorough vet check before making the moves. And we learned that not all airlines are created equal in terms of pet care - KLM is the gold standard. I hate that we put him through it all, but he had been an abused stray in the US and the three of us were totally bonded. And he loved every single place we moved to - Cairo had the best cats to torment (and sidewalk treats to snag before we noticed), Lusaka had the best wildlife to chase (except that time he licked a toad and had a 48 hour psychedelic trip), Johannesburg had the best house to break out of so he could go to the Thai restaurant and beg for treats, Nairobi had the best house guard to hang out with and the best bark echoes across the valley, and Boston had his first snow experience.

What an adventurous and great life! :)

We travel with our cat, Paddy, in our motorhome. I can't imagine flying or taking a train or bus. He freaks out when I take him to the vet. They always have to sedate him to get him out of the carrier. I'm sure starting with travel when they are young is best. This was an invaluable post for those who can travel with their fur babies.

Thank you for the comment!

I've seen people take small dogs in carriers to planes and they're mostly quiet, but I guess they're sedated.

What great suggestions, I especially like the motion sickness ones, as its something I battle too and can relate to.

Thank you for the comment! For motion sickness, pills should help, but to most animals it's more stressful.
