I'm seeing this again this morning and I'm so glad 🎉
this is my dream place to live.
I absolutely love it and would be happy to spend the rest of my life there.
Being a person that doesn't like to be in large populations, and I love the water, basically a fish out of water, and the mountains and the small town charm I mean, who doesn't want that?
There's one thing I don't understand though and I don't know if it's a positive or a negative thing and I'm looking at it. You know as an American and things are much different here.
What is UNESCO? What does it mean and do you consider it a positive thing or not so much like does it have anything to do with the government controlled thing?
I'm not pro government at least not bad government and most governments aren't for us so I was just wondering if it had to do with the government.
thanks Gabi! It looks like I enjoyed this for a second time I had forgotten about it. I'll have to save it 😉
Well, UNESCO is a UN agency, protecting heritage, both tangible and intangible. When a site gets on the UNESCO list, it means it is very significant for human history and culture. In the USA you have sites like the Everglades or Grand Canyon, but also the Independence Hall, Monticello or houses built by F.L. Wright.
I went here for the first time when I was about 10, and what fascinated me the most was the sign at the entrance to the town that said the elevation of Hallstatt is -0- meters. Right at sea level. How does that happen in the middle of the mountains? ;0)
I take it back. I must be in the wrong town. It was almost 50 years ago. Now I am curious about what town I am thinking of. We used to stay in St. Wolfgang and did day trips. I like the town. A little overrun with tourists, but that is what you get these days!
I'm interested now, too :) If you remember which town it was, please let me know. The whole of Austria should be high above 0m, so perhaps a different country?
it's beautiful, love the picture of the saltines and didn't know they were the oldest in the world that's fascinating. Also the things about burials that was kind of interesting and had never heard of any type of custom or maybe not custom but doing that with the bones but it sounds like they do it respectfully.., very interesting. thank you!
Now I feel I should fly back home. Perhaps for a short holiday break. Even winter can be nice. I really miss my Austrian pastries!

The UN? yikes 😳
🤣 well, yes 🙂
Love the beautiful photos that accompany your article! 📷
You're welcome! It's such a photogenic place :)
Glad you shared this. Yet another place to add to my growing list of places to visit.
I know what you mean :) When in the neighborhood... :)
Wow, this is so charming. I feel like I need to plan a trip!
🙂 Are you close to Hallstatt?
No... will require some planning... :)

It can happen in a hilly area, but Hallstatt should be at 511m.
Did you like the lake and the town?

I lived in Vienna at the time, so pretty sure it was in Austria, but I will think about it and look around.
Gorgeous!!!!
What a charming place. I'm glad you shared your visit with us.
Thank you!
Great story. We also have a town in North Georgia that looks like this. I hope you are doing well. L Jean Davis
Really? What is the name of the town?
Helen, GA
Wow! I want to visit now! Looks like a great place.
That fun fact is very fun indeed!
Imagine copying towns across the globe :)

Thank you! There are many ossuaries in Europe, and people like visiting those, I just never understood the appeal.
Meant salt mines not saltines 🤪 voice text!
Well I would miss them too! :-) And would miss my Croatian cakes :-)
