You know I write a travel newsletter, and it’s a drop in the ocean. The internet is overflowing with travel blogs and Instagram reels, and I believe Substack travel newsletters are a great way of staying inspired and informed.
I decided to share a selection of Substack travel newsletters I subscribe to, mainly to provide new ideas and advice to you, my readers, saving you some hours of scrolling for content you actually want to read.
Why subscribe to travel newsletters?
Admit it – planning a trip or just dreaming about one can be overwhelming. That’s where travel newsletters come in. They offer:
expert insights: advice and recommendations from seasoned travelers
inspiration: from exotic destinations to unique itineraries
tailored content: there’s a newsletter for everyone’s needs, from budget travel to off-the-beaten-path adventures.
How I choose my travel newsletters
Since I write in this niche, it’s natural I follow other travel writers. However, I’m picky about what lands in my inbox, so here’s what I need from a travel newsletter:
relevance: I like content that matches my interests
content & value: reliable information is a personal favorite, that is tangible
frequency: weekly or bi-weekly works best for me
design: I like seeing a lot of photos.
My favorite travel newsletters
Here are the newsletters I keep coming back to, each offering something unique (in alphabetical order):
1) Belgium and Beyond by Backpacking Bella
What it covers: Claire focuses on travel inspiration and tips, especially for solo travelers, with an emphasis on affordable and adventurous journeys. She writes about traveling to unique destinations around the world and settling in Belgium.
Why I love it: Because it combines practical tips with a personal touch – the writing is warm and inspiring, like getting advice from a well-traveled friend.
2) Beyond Borders with Doctora the Explorer
What it covers: Dr. Charity is a dynamic traveler and her newsletter is just like her, combining travel, recommendations, global insights, and a podcast. It’s perfect for those seeking inspiration to live boldly and explore the world.
Why I love it: Because Charity effortlessly blends travel and self-improvement, bursting with positive energy, and combining all the above with actionable advice.
3) Chasing ADVNTR
What it covers: Gretchen writes about practical tips for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure travelers. And many posts are about family travel.
Why I love it: I love her beautiful photos, and my favorite thing is her Postcard series, where she just posts a photo with a short comment.
4) Duck Abroad
What it covers: Chris writes about family travel, exploring historical places and unique locations to visit, offering tips for helping to build a travel journal.
Why I love it: I love the educational side of this newsletter, since Chris developed a travel app for his kids to learn about the history and culture of the places they visited – the app is available to anyone, and it includes a travel journal for adding photos and notes of your adventures.
5) France in Between
What it covers: Betty writes about… France! This is a delightful newsletter exploring French culture, lifestyle, and everyday life, covering topics like hidden gems and personal anecdotes about living or traveling there.
Why I love it: Well, I love France 😊 And I love this newsletter because I can feel Betty’s love of France, its small towns and countryside. And through her observations and photos, those places come alive.
6) Itchy Feet
What it covers: Daniel writes about travel, culture, and personal growth through his adventures around the world. In his posts there are plenty of practical advice, unique destinations and descriptions of meaningful experiences.
Why I love it: His writing is engaging, making me feel like I’m his travel buddy. There are also many practical advice, like what gear to buy or what not miss.
7) Kewtie’s Substack
What it covers: This is a charming photo newsletter that explores the joy of travel, creativity, and personal musings. Kewtie’s content feels personal and engaging, inviting you to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the world around you.
Why I love it: I just LOVE her photography!
8) Miles, Wines & Dines
What it covers: This newsletter is rather new, but I chose it because it combines travel with culinary adventures while being bilingual (Greek and English). What drew me to it were posts about Argentina.
Why I love it: Because of Ioanna’s Patagonia photos and posts – the literal end of the world!
9) Sunhats and Chardonnay
What it covers: This newsletter celebrates the finer side of travel, combined with personal reflections. From vineyard tours and dining in castles to packing tips, the newsletter offers a kind of practical elegance.
Why I love it: Although I’m a red wine lover, Laura inspires me to start indulging while on my own travels.
10) Travel and Culture
What it covers: Marie and Ann Marie write the newsletter together and feature travel guides and personal stories that inspire a deeper understanding of the places they visit.
Why I love it: Since the newsletter is written by two writers, there are two perspectives, which I see as added value. Also, they go beyond usual travel tips or stories and share their most personal experiences.
How to make the most of travel newsletters
To get the most out of these newsletters, I’ve found a few strategies that work:
create a folder or label: organize your inbox by keeping all your travel newsletters in one place
skim regularly: even if you’re not traveling soon, browsing newsletters can spark ideas
take notes: keep a list of tips, map locations, or resources that catch your eye, they will be saviors when it’s time to plan
engage with content: many newsletters link to blogs, guides, or videos – you might find even more relevant content.
Why I love reading travel newsletters
For me, reading about travel is like looking through a window to the world. These newsletters bring a sense of adventure and discovery to my everyday life, even when I’m not traveling.
If you’re like me and always dream about your next trip, love uncovering new destinations, or just want to stay inspired, I can’t recommend them enough.
Now, your turn – do you have a favorite travel newsletter? Let me know.
This publication will stay free forever, but if you feel I deserve a cup of matcha 🍵 here and there, then please buy me some - the next drink’s on me! ☕
My favorite one is yours Gabi 😉
I’m not everyone’s cup of tea, as I don’t just do travel but also parenting and expat life in general , but I’d be honored if you’d take a look at my substack. But if not, good to see you highlighting a few of my reads anyway.
